Skinny Dipping in the Gene Pool | ||||||||
April 4, 2003 Art Gallery |
The emerging field of “Genomic Art” is the subject of a seminar offered this semester by Ruth West at the University of California, Los Angeles. The seminar introduces students “to innovative art practices that have scientific concepts at their core.” Among the works surveyed is “Alba,” a transgenic rabbit that has raised questions about the line between art and science. In her own art, West creates interative computer-based installations that combine animation, sound, text, and video. “The installations are about art, science and the resilience of the human spirit,” says West, who was a molecular genetics researcher before becoming an artist. Two of West’s installations are featured below. More works can be found at http://www.viewingspace.com/
